Analysis Of The Book The Little Flower - 901 Words
The little Flower The Smallest Woman in the Worldâ⬠Clarice Lispector The short story revolves around the themes of eroticizing, colonialization, subjugating and African literature. Marcel Pretre labelled as a ââ¬Å"hunter and man of the worldâ⬠stumbles upon a village of people and encounters the smallest woman on earth. He exoticizes her ethnicity and her small figure. She becomes subjugated because she has no identity and he labels her to his standards naming her Little Flower. Only upon their meeting does she have an identity when sheââ¬â¢s discovered, treated like a prize or animal for the subjectivity of the world. When photographs of Little Flower become published readers get different interpretations of how people react to her photo, making her subjugated by white western society. Despite being, objectified Little Flower ââ¬Å"still loved the color of a man who isnââ¬â¢t black.â⬠Little Flower doesnââ¬â¢t understand or know the feeling of love but she idolizes Marcel because heââ¬â¢s not black. The dynamics of their rela tionship play on colonialism. Despite being exoticized and discovered by Marcel, her life finally has meaning because he encounters her. Their relationship implies that people or other nations are defined worthy or interesting according to western civilization. Creative Writing Assigment Essay Example For Students
Creative Writing Assigment Essay Psycho?PrologueThe door to the motel room slammed shut, shaking the walls. Mother. Mother where are you? God damn it. You get out here right now. Ive not finished with you yet mother! Norman screamed. He stormed through the hotel room. Come out come out where ever you are. Norman lifted the cover on the edge of the bed, and ducked down to look under it. Mother, I know youre here somewhere. Im going to find you! In the bathroom Maude hid, cowering behind a shower curtain. With every one of her sons shouts she curled tighter and tighter into a ball. She pulled the shower curtain all the way around the tub, in a vain attempt to hide. She had no idea why she chose the bathroom; she just ran straight in there. Mommy dearest. Oh mommy. Norman slowly opened the door to the bathroom. One, two, Normans coming for you. He walked over to the bath and slowly pulled back the shower curtain. Hello mother. Why are you hiding? Ive got something for you. Maude whimpered with fear as the last rays of the sun glinted off the blade in Normans hand. ______________________________________________________________________________You ok there mum? Anthony asked. Im fine sweetheart. Now stop worrying about me and keep your eyes on the road. Jane replied. Want some music on mum? Anthony inquired. No darling. Lets just talk. Tell me more about your fiance. She said. Well youre going to love her. Shes funny, outgoing, compassionate, and beautiful. And I adore her. She makes me smile. She keeps me happy. Ive never met anyone like her in my whole life. He smiled as he talked. She sounds great. So tell me how you two met. Its strange actually. I saw her for the first time in the lift in our office building, but I never talked to her. Then it was my turn to fetch the sandwiches from the local shop. I gave my order and turned around to sit down. As I did I bumped into someone and said sorry. It was then I heard it, her voice. Its like honey or silk. I looked up and there she was. We sat together waiting for our sandwiches. It turns out that her offices are on the floor above ours. We walked back together and I didnt want to say goodbye. We just clicked. I dont know how else to describe it. As the lift approached my floor I decided to risk everything and ask her out on a date. She said yes and weve never looked back. She the one. I know it. Jane smiled and said In the end thats how it was for your father and I. We just knew. Alison sounds great. Im sure Ill love her and that well get on very well. Unless you think Im one of those frightening mother in law types? they both laughed. Anthony and his mother shared a close relationship, although not in the oedipal sense, nor were they dependent upon one another. They just enjoyed each others company. They fought, but then who doesnt fight with their parents? But Anthony and Janes fights were never vicious and never lasted long. Anthony was happy with his life. As he drove along he thought about how well everything was going. He couldnt wait for his mother to meet Alison. Although he had talked to them both about the other they had never actually met in person. This was due to the fact that his mother had been abroad for the past year. They hadnt even conversed much as due to constantly moving, Jane phone calls were infrequent and short, answered by Anthony. He was glad that his mother was home now and going to live near them. Hed missed her, but travelling was always something his mother had always wanted to do. He looked over at her and smiled. .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f , .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .postImageUrl , .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f , .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:hover , .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:visited , .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:active { border:0!important; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:active , .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u31875ae35f74a395a38ee7d420ba357f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Total Quality Management Argumentative Essay Anthony, its getting late. Edward Scissorhands is much more than just an amusing story- it is a social commentary.
Edward Scissorhands is much more than just an amusing story- it is a social commentary. Many people have enjoyed and laughed along the queer and strange tale of Edward Scissorhands. Yet, as amusing as it is, the story is just not a movie to make people laugh at the absurdities of the characters. It is more of a commentary which portrays how we isolate people just because they are different. Yes, we many deny this kind of behaviour in this world. But it is real- for example- Bullying.Picture this: A man with scissors for hands. He has scars all over his ghostly white face. His body has a skin of hard black material. His hair is wild. Is he a freak? To tell you the truth, I think he is just because of his appearance. But the movie makes the same scene. He is isolated because people only judge him of his appearance and they treat as a freak.Edward Scissorhands also exposes the fear of people to new cultures, races, social groups and the isolated people simple because they are different to 'normal' people.EDWARD ALTMAN 100B9542.JPGFor example in one scene where Edward eats with the family, the whole family is staring, or just feeling awkward. They are acting like that not just because he is a stranger who is eating with them, but he is so different to the family -especially his hands. The film also expresses the need to not just judge people by their looks, but saying that if you go further into their heart, you would find gold. So it joins the 'beauty is not on the outside, but in the outside debate'. It is basically valuing not just beauty, but the beauty of your soul.An issue brought up in the film is also segregation in the community with different groups. It is almost like the olden days in...

The Nature Of Leadership Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Nature Of Leadership - Case Study Example Such a situation arises from the complex nature of leadership. The only common thread that can be found is that the nature of leadership involves an influencing process and the consequences of this influencing process (Antonakis, Cianciola & Sternberg, 2004). It is for this reason the leadership definition that works for me is focussed on the influential nature of leadership and its implications. Daft and Lane 2008, p.4, define leadership as ââ¬Å"an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposesâ⬠. Expanding on the term influence is a key reason for my choice of this definition. The nature of influence here is that it is not passive but active, and it is multidirectional, and without the element of coercion. Furthermore, the influence is not merely from leaders to followers, but is reciprocal in that there are times when the influence flows from followers to leaders. Moving on to another key ingredient in this definition of the intention for real changes, it implies that leadership does not accept a status quo situation, but aims for creating change. This striving for change is based on the shared purposes of the leaders and followers and not on the desires of the leaders. In real terms this means that the created change is towards a desired future state or purpose (Daft & Lane, 2008). This definition also brings us to the important aspect of leadership in that it cannot be present in the absence of followers and that followers are an essential to leadership (Maxwell, 1993). 2. Without followers there are no leaders. What is known about followers? The first thought that comes to mind when we talk about followers is sheep following the shepherd, implying that followers merely follow a leader. This is not essentially true, for there are many in the flock of followers that assist the leader in the influence of leadership, and demonstrate capabilities to become leaders in the future (Yukl, 2006). This perception of followers indicates that followers are made up of different types of individuals. Followers may be classified into five types of followers. The first type we may take as the sheep and they look up to the leader for directing them in all that they do. The second type of followers consists of those that keep saying yes all the time to the leader, or accept leadership influence without any outward sign of opposition and devout their energies towards accomplishing the direction of the leadership influence. The third class of followers consist of individuals that we may term as alienated. These individuals are capable of independent thought and action. The problem here is that they also possess a lot of negative energy that works to the detriment of the group, as the leadership influence is unable to get to them and they make no positive contribution to the shared purpose of the group, rather they work against it. Leadership influence that can remove the negative energy from these followers can convert them to extremely useful members of the group and the leader. The next class of followers are the fence sitters or those that we may term as pragmatists. These followers refrain from accepting the influence of leaders, till such time they are sure that the trend is favourable and then jump on the bandwagon, in the manner that trees sway in the direction of the wind. It is not that they have any opposing views or are capable of contributing positively towards the shared purposes. Self-preservation is of primary importance, and hence the wait and see attitude on the impact of the change influence that emanates from the leader. The final classification of followers may be viewed as star followers. They possess the same vibrancy as the

Instructional Strategies for ELL Classrooms Essay
Instructional Strategies for ELL Classrooms - Essay Example With input, the focus should be on the student and the extent to which he understands (Gass et al 1994). Researchers admit that nonuse takes place when the information contained in the input is included into a learner's grammar. However, the fact that the information is already included into a grammar does not necessarily exclude it from being utilized--although it may be used in a different way from what one normally thinks of. When the information contained in the input is already a part of one's knowledge base, the additional input might be used for rule strengthening or hypothesis reconfirmation. Part of becoming a fluent speaker of a second language involves the automatic retrieval of information from one's knowledge base. The knowledge base is developed through practice or repeated exposure to exemplars. Thus, information that may appear redundant may be serving an important purpose in terms of the access the learner has to that information (Jonassen and Hannum 1998). 2. Feedback is important technique in learning because it helps a student to understand his mistakes and correct them at once. Feedback should be supported by events such as motivating students, communicating the learning objectives, directing students' attention, activating related knowledge, providing guidance, promoting transfer (generalization), eliciting performance, and providing feedback. The teachers' statements, which are spontaneous and oral, are more difficult to categorize than the written statements of the authors. The content and grammar of the teachers' statements were less structured and precise than those of the authors. On-going, specific and immediate feedback helps teachers to save time and direct learning process. Feedback encourages students to uimprove. Several analogies constructed for the same concept can help the students view the target concept from different perspectives. The analogies function like conceptual lenses, with each one bringing different feat ures of the concept into sharper focus (Kitajima and Polson 1997). Teachers also are encouraged to use the model to construct additional analogies to complement an author's analogy. Several analogies constructed for the same concept can help the students view the target concept from different perspectives. The analogies function like conceptual lenses, with each one bringing different features of the concept into sharper focus. During normal or stable times, scientific activities turn to the refinement of established knowledge claims. But the review of historical documents and actual practice of scientists revealed that there are also times when members of a scientific community are in disagreement about what are the appropriate background knowledge and critical problems that should guide the design of investigations and the evaluation of evidence and knowledge claims (Gass et al 1994). 3. Taken together, instructional steps are a direct outcome of teacher assessment decisions that begin to alter the dynamics of the classroom learning environment. The public expression of what matters and what is valued begins to change. As students learn the criteria, they not only learn the rules of the game in the classroom, they also learn what is valued in the scientific discipline (Manouchehri 2001). Other models include having students work in pairs or small groups to come to a consensus view through

Importance Of Both Financial And Non Financial Motivation Commerce Essay
Importance Of Both Financial And Non Financial Motivation Commerce Essay It is widely believed that an effective management system of motivation in a company will directly influence employees to achieve their goals and businesses objectives (Accel-team, 2010). According to Accel-team (2010), motivation can be explained in financial and non-financial aspects. Financial rewards can be defined as using money as an incentive to employees for improving productivity. In contrast, non-financial rewards motivate employees by job enlargement, team working, and quality control circles etc. The below argument will show that financial and non-financial motivations are both determinants which affect employees through investigation. Taloy year pointed out that the best way to motivate people at work is by money. In other words, those workers who produce more in a fair day can receive more payment (Accel-team, 2010). The main reason for workers to go to work is that they can earn money to consume (Accel-team, 2010). Thus, workers are encouraged to work as efficient as possible they can (Accel-team, 2010). For example, Tesco is one of the top three retails in UK (Thetimes100, 2011). There are over 3700 stores and 440000 employees globally, which is very difficult to organize well (Thetimes100, 2011). However, Tesco makes good use of incentive payment to motivate employees (Thetimes100, 2011). Tesco not only give employees increased income, but also use targeted benefit to support the varied lifestyles of employees (Thetimes100, 2011). Furthermore, Fringe benefits prefer to provide their worker some in kind rather than in crash (Accel-team, 2010). For instance, company cars and private health insurance may lead to good performance of employees in a company (Accel-team, 2010). As another example that the fortune magazine states that Google is a company which is listed on the top 50 companies to best work for (Ezinearticles, 2008). Google provide their staff some usual perks which certain health cares and children facilities by allowing workers to bring their pets to work (Ezinearticles, 2008). The result for these series of Fringe benefits not only reduces the number of sick-leave days, but also can bring a good environment for workers. Nevertheless, financial rewards are not the only method that satisfies employees. There are non-financial rewards, which are as important as financial reward (Changingminds, 2011). Fredrick Herzberg of needs has claimed that both financial and non-financial rewards play significant roles in motivation (Changingminds, 2011). This is show in Figure 1, physiological need is at the bottom of the pyramid, such as wages for worker to be used each week or providing workers a good working environment (Changingminds, 2011). If the physiological needs are satisfied, employees needs will move to the next level which is called safety needs, such as living in a safe area or job security. As the level goes up in the pyramid, the financial factors will not satisfy the workers need while non-financial rewards motivate employees (Changingminds, 2011). Figure 1 (Changingminds, 2011) In order to motivate employees in higher levels in Maslows hierarchy of needs, it is necessary for business to consider more in non-financial rewards such as job enlargement and team work quality control circles. Job enlargement involves giving workers more jobs to avoid repeating doing the same job. In other words, they can change their jobs and tasks, so that they will not feel bored. For example, KFC invested more than 240 million Yuan for 20 million employees over a 17-year period when it entered China market ( Robroad, nd).The reason for KFC to use such a large amount of money to train their employees is that it aims to improve employees ability to deal with different jobs and tasks ( Robroad, nd). Meanwhile, team work is another good way to combine polled talents to work more efficiently. For example, one of the worldwide leaders in luxury automobiles BMW believed that teamwork helps workers trust each other and share their ideas by brainstorming, which hence helps the company run more efficiently (Swampfox, nd). Therefore, BMW spent thousands of money to make workers learnt how to trust and communicate better through a series of practice by using ultimate driving machine (Swampfox, nd). Finally, quality control circles are able to improve the nature of job directly. Staff can meet regularly to study and solve production problems. In addition, they also have abilities to help the company to make decisions. The well known computer company IBM does well in this area, employees in IBM can take part in decision making and bring some useful ideas for the company (Ocities, nd). At the same time employees feel that they are trusted and powerful when they were making an attempt to solve the problem (Ocities, nd). Therefore, non-financial motivation such as job enlargement, team work and quality control circles are also effective ways to motivate employees. In summary, it is necessary for a company to make sure what the employees really need and choose financial rewards or non- financial rewards to encourage them. There is no doubt that fair day pay and fringe benefits are still reasons why people keep working. However, non-financial rewards which include job enlargement, team work and quality control circles are more attracted for some higher educated employees, which are equally as important as financial rewards. Therefore, businesses need to balance each of them and make the most use of them to motivate the staffs.
